What is EcoLogic?
EcoLogic, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, nongovernmental organization, empowers rural and indigenous peoples to restore and protect tropical ecosystems in Central America and southern Mexico. We are not a foundation or a private business, and we no longer provide grants or financial support to organizations with which we are not directly partnered in the region.

Seedlings in GuatemalaWhat does EcoLogic do?
EcoLogic empowers rural and indigenous peoples to restore and protect tropical ecosystems. We collaborate with local communities to identify, evaluate, and prioritize their conservation and natural resource needs and then work with them to obtain the skills, financing, materials, and other support needed to sustainably use their natural resources and rehabilitate damaged and degraded natural places. We help communities identify and put in place a variety of strategies to increase their economic self-sufficiency, environmental health, and adaptability in response to climate change and extreme weather events in ways that also encourage the long-term survival of the biodiversity around them.

Where does EcoLogic work?
EcoLogic works in rural and indigenous communities in Central America and Mexico. Our headquarters is in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the United States and we have regional offices in Guatemala and Mexico.

Making_models_HondurasHow is EcoLogic different from other conservation and development organizations?
We believe that the people who live near or in a threatened ecosystem are those best positioned to repair and protect that system for the long term. When people understand that their quality of life is reliant upon the health of their natural environment and they have a direct hand in identifying and creating ways to protect and sustainably use their natural resources, both people and nature benefit. Our emphasis is on community collaboration and community-led resource management and stewardship. Our vision sees a future where rural communities lead in the creation of a sustainable world for both people and nature. Learn more about our approach to community collaboration, landscape-level change, and how we help solve environmental challenges.

How does EcoLogic finance its work?
EcoLogic receives funding and donations from individuals, private and corporate foundations, and government institutions and organizations.

Honduras nurseryHow does EcoLogic apply funds at its project sites?
We collaborate with the communities where we work and our local partners to prioritize needs and then allocate funds to undertake these activities. You can learn more about what we are doing at our individual project sites and also on our solutions page.

How does EcoLogic work with its partners?
We collaborate directly with local organizations where we work, providing resources, education, and training on environmental management issues. These organizations take part in project management and implementation. See our partners pages for more information.

How many people work at EcoLogic?
Currently 11 staff members work at our Cambridge headquarters, and five staff members and 10 field technicians work in Central America and Mexico. We also have a number of volunteers and interns who help us both at headquarters and in the region.

What is EcoLogic’s operating budget?
You can find the answer to this question on our Financial Information page.

Kids in BelizeWhy do you only work in Latin America?
Central America and Mexico are home to some of the most diverse biological habitats on the planet, but also some of the world’s poorest people. EcoLogic works in this region because we feel there is opportunity to connect people to their environments and improve the well-being of both. We have built our expertise in project work and community collaboration in Central America and Mexico.

Where can I find info about jobs, volunteer positions, and internships with EcoLogic?
Check out the “Join Us” tab at the top of our website, or click here for more information.

How can I support EcoLogic?
Please donate. Any amount will help. Donations are not the only way to support our mission, however. Tell family, friends, coworkers, and neighbors about EcoLogic and the work we do. Become an Ambassador, hold fundraising events, and/or donate time by volunteering at EcoLogic’s Cambridge office. If you have particular scientific expertise, please contact us to explore opportunities to volunteer in the field. You can also sign up for our newsletters (sent via email marketing software provided by a partner), and support our proceed-sharing partners. And, of course, play our game and take our quizzes, and learn about the environmental impact of your choices as a consumer. Become inspired by the natural beauty of Central American and Mexican habitats, and spread the word about the importance of functioning ecosystems and their plants and animals.
