Director of Development
The Director of Development is responsible for the strategic direction and overall management of fundraising initiatives, both institutional and individual, including planning, budgeting, monitoring, and implementation. In addition, the position oversees all communication efforts and plays a leadership role in the overall organization's strategic planning. The director also represents the organization at philanthropic-related events and meetings.
EcoLogic is recognized for doing cutting edge work in international development and natural resource management. As the demands for these programs grow, there will be many opportunities for an entrepreneurial person, such as pioneering the development of corporate social responsibility partnerships. The director is responsible for raising S2.1 million annually and the annual budget is expected to grow to $6 million by 2011. The director reports to the Managing Director.
Responsibilities
Fundraising Strategy and Planning: 40%
- Develop and revise annual fundraising plans (institutions and individuals), in coordination with Managing Director, Executive Director, Board Development Committee, and fundraising staff
- Provide input and feedback to Managing and Executive Directors in developing annual operating and program budgets
- Monitor and report on progress of fundraising activities throughout the year, and alert Managing Director and Executive Director of any need for modification of fundraising goals or strategies
- Prepare and monitor budgets for all development activities
- Refine current information gathering process (especially in regard to proposals and report writing) and oversee implementation of refined process
- Engage the full Board of Directors in fundraising and act as a liaison with the Board Development Committee
Direct Fundraising: 45%
- Oversee the development of proposals and reports for institutional funders (i.e., government, foundations, corporations)
- Manage the development of fundraising activities targeted to individual donors (e.g., special events, annual appeals, e-newsletter, and direct mailings)
- Ensure individual donors and foundations are cultivated and stewarded appropriately, whether through personal contact, board members, or staff
- Represent organization at philanthropic-related events and meetings
- Identify and cultivate new donor relationships
Supervisory Responsibilities: 15%
- Lead a development team of three: direct reports are Program Officer, Institutions; Program Officer, Individuals; and Communications Officer
- Oversee development staff, including development of job descriptions, hiring, training, and annual evaluations
Qualifications
- Over six years of experience in fundraising with a demonstrated track record of success
- Two or more years of supervisory experience
- Strong communications skills (written and verbal)
- Fluency in Spanish preferred
- B.A./B.S degree, with graduate degree preferred, in international relations, environmental science, communications or a related field
- Available to travel 20 percent of the time

- Knowledge of and passion for environmental, social justice, and/or international development issues
- Ability to operate effectively and respectfully in a multicultural environment
- Prior experience working overseas
- Willingness to travel to remote locations in Latin America
