EcoLogic combats climate change

Deforestation and the degradation of forested lands is the second greatest cause of greenhouse gas emissions, responsible for 20 percent of human-generated emissions and second only to electricity production. With an increasing demand for food and fuel in developing nations, forests are rapidly being degraded and destroyed, often replaced by agricultural lands that often use unsustainable practices.

However, trees absorb and store carbon, providing an excellent resource to combat increasing carbon emissions. By protecting existing forests and restoring deforested lands, we can help reduce concentrations of atmospheric carbon dioxide and mitigate the effects of climate change.

EcoLogic is proud to be a leader in the field of reforestation and forest conservation projects, helping to reduce atmospheric carbon dioxide while providing needed benefits for the well-being of the rural poor. We work with local partner organizations and community leaders to develop and implement reforestation projects that restore and protect critical natural resources, including safe drinking water and raw materials.

Furthermore, our CarbonPlus program allows these communities to finance their reforestation projects using carbon offset credits purchased by those in the United States and Europe. EcoLogic is leading the way in assisting communities in rural Latin America to meet the growing demand for forestry-based carbon credits.

We are also working with communities to reduce their impact on existing forests by enabling them to use their resources more efficiently. By constructing fuel-efficient stoves that require 60 percent less firewood, we are helping families save their forests and save their health, which is threatened by the smoke of traditional open-pit fires. We are also helping farmers to implement agroforestry, increasing forest cover and increasing their crop yields by 50 percent. This allows people to produce more food using less land, which means less deforestation.
