World Environment Day Pledge

I will do my part to save the air we breathe and the water we drink by fighting global climate change.

I pledge to be more energy efficient by:

Changing my lightbulbs:

I will replace incandescent bulbs with more energy efficient LEDs or CFLs. These bulbs use 75 percent less energy and last more than 10 times longer. Replacing one 60W incandescent with a CFL can save around 370 lbs of CO₂. Cost: $5.

Adjusting the thermostat:

I will adjust my thermostat down 2° in winter and up 2° in summer, saving about 2,000 lbs of CO₂ per year. Cost: Nothing.

Washing my clothes:

I will wash my clothes in cold water, since 85-90% of the energy used by the machine goes to heating the water. This will reduce my washer's energy use by 75% and save nearly 500 lbs of CO₂ per year. Cost: Nothing.

Drying my laundry:

I will air dry my clothes, since dryers use 10-15% of domestic energy in the United States! This will save 700 lbs of CO₂ if I air dry my clothes for 6 months out of the year. Cost: Nothing.

Changing the power settings on my computer:

I will set my computer to enter system standby or hibernate after 30 minutes of inactivity. When computers are powered down, they use 70% less energy than when in "on" mode. Cost: Nothing.

Reducing electrical leakage:

I will unplug unused electrical devices when not in use, or else turn use a power strip to prevent leakage, since most devices draw an idle electrical current even when they are turned off. Cost: Less than $20.
